1. Control Yourself

2. Talk Calmly

When a situation arises, there’s going to be a lot of noise and emotions running high. You need to speak to the source of the situation calmly. If you react to them with emotion, they’re only going to feed off of it and become more emotional themselves. When you invoke a sense of calm, eventually, they’ll calm down, too.

It takes a lot of energy to be emotional. It takes less to be calm. They’ll wear themselves out eventually, but you’ll still have plenty of energy left to ensure they leave the area.

4. Empathize

When a situation occurs, it’s usually because someone feels as though they’re not being listened to. You can be that person by listening to them. Approach them sympathetically and tell them that they can tell you what’s wrong elsewhere. Once there, give them the chance to talk about their issues.

5. Call Law Enforcement

Sometimes the problem is above your paygrade. While you attempt to distract or deescalate the situation, you or someone you know should contact local law enforcement. With more numbers on your side, the situation will be able to be handled a lot more easily.
